Without the necessary paperwork, your car could be impounded or you'll face heavy on-the-spot fines. Keep these documents to hand, as some countries will require you to present them on request.
 
  • A valid UK Passport.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • International motor insurance certificate (Green Card). This is compulsory in some countries.
  • The original vehicle registration document. (If the vehicle is a company car and not registered in your name, you'll need written authority to use it from the owner. A special form of authority is needed for Portugal.)
  • Proof of medical insurance.
  • EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), which can be applied for online: www.dh.gov.uk
