Get help if needed
If anyone is hurt, ask any bystanders to call for an ambulance at once. If there is no one present who is qualified at first aid, you should check on casualties yourself.
Assess the casualties
Make sure all casualties are breathing and have the ability to continue breathing.
If there are no signs of breathing:
-
Tilt the head back and lift the chin to open their airway.
-
Pinch the nose and blow into the casualty's lungs.
If there is no pulse:
- Apply chest compressions between the nipples to force blood through the heart and around the body. Pump at the rate of 100/minute (faster than once per second).
Apply life-saving first aid
Treat casualties with life-threatening or serious injuries first. Keep in mind that a casualty who is screaming is less likely to be in danger than someone who is silent or moaning.
Bleeding
Control bleeding by applying direct pressure and, where possible, elevating injured body parts.
Burns
Pouring cold water over burns for a minimum of 20 minutes or until the casualty no longer complains of pain.
Broken bones
Make sure the casualty sits or lies still, keeping the injured body part supported by a blanket or pillow until help arrives.
Give accurate info to the ambulance crew:
Call 999 if anyone is hurt, and tell the control officer:
-
Your exact location.
-
Seriousness of the accident, details of any hazards and whether any casualties are trapped.
-
The number, sex and approximate ages of casualties, along with any information you have about their condition.
Give reassurance & minor first aid treatment
Let the casualty know that help is on its way and treat minor cuts.
Treat shock
Anyone hurt in an accident will probably suffer some degree of shock. Talk to the casualty gently and lay him or her down if necessary, making sure the feet are higher than the head. Cover the casualty with a coat or blanket.
