From the 18th September 2006, new regulations came into force governing the use of child car seats.
 
Children under the age of 3 years of age must now travel in a car seat appropriate for their weight, in both the front and back of the vehicle. If this is not possible, they are not allowed to travel.

not wearing a seat belt? This explains why child seats are now mandatory in most countries, including the UK.
 
Please note that, when choosing the right child seat, the weight of your child is far more important than their age. In Europe, the use of child seats is required by law and is covered by EEC Directive 44, which subdivides the requirements into five weight groups:
